How to do the black snake experiment.
For this science experiment you will need adult supervision. It is a fun way of introducing little science geeks to the world of fabulous chemistry. It is fairly easy too, but requires perfection, so have a practise go before a demonstration at a birthday party.
What you need:
80g of sugar
20g bicarbonate of soda
methylated spirits or lighter fluid
lighter or matches
sand
heatproof bowl or aluminium foil

Black snake experiment
Fill your bowl with sand, make a little dip in the middle. Mix the sugar and bicarbonate of soda well and pour the mixture into the dip in the sand.
Pour Methylated spirits around the mixture, do not over do this, too much will wet the mixture and the experiment will not work. Light the spirits/ lighter fluid. Wait….. The whole process takes about 20 minutes. It is quite mesmerising to watch.
Thank you for watching and have fun!!
PS. Make sure it is safe to light a fire. Always keep a bucket of water nearby if things go wrong.
